St. Andrew's Society Newsletter - December 2010

My Fellow Scots,

We trust that you have enjoyed the events of the past year. It has been an exciting year of growth and renewed vigor on the part of the Board to embrace our mission statement:

  1. To preserve and promote Scottish heritage, culture, literature, it’s visual and performing arts.
  2. To educate the public and the membership regarding the history and culture of Scotland by promoting programs and events for these purposes.

Society President Dave Wallace with his wife Suzanne at the St. Andrew's Ball

Our most recent events have included our first Kirkin’ of the season at the First Presbyterian Church of Naples, our very successful St. Andrew’s Ball at The Club at Pelican Bay, the charitable donation of time by members of the Society working “the Red Kettles” for the Salvation Army and the great fun and camaraderie we all enjoyed during our most recent McGolf, McCroquet and McNibbles event we had at Moorings Country Club.

We promise you a full schedule of fun and entertaining events in 2011 and encourage you to regularly check our web page for updates. If you have not checked out our web page lately please take a moment right now to review the plethora of information that our web page Director has prepared for you: http://www.standrewsswfl.com/. The website is designed to provide you with “virtual look” at what we as a Society have done, are doing and are planning. We are continually updating the site with member pictures, links to relevant information and additions to our main menu.

Our marketing committee meets every month to discuss and plan events. This meeting is open to any member who would like to attend. Currently we are in the planning stages for a “High Tea” event, a possible theatrical vignette and Scottish dance lessons prior to next season’s St. Andrew’s Ball. We will post the next marketing meeting date on the web site and we welcome your input and participation by attending or responding to the Board with any suggestions you may have.

Of particular note, we are very excited about the upcoming event we are planning with Maclean Travel. “Aye, Scotland is a calling” and your Board has a very special event planned for the official celebration of Tartan Day on April 6, 2011. Travel with the society and guests to Scotland as we bring you the sights, sounds and flavors of our beloved Scotland by way of an evening with Maclean Travel at the Grey Oaks Country Club. This promises to be an exciting presentation of the benefits and features of traveling to Scotland. Highlighted by Scottish attire and the playing of the pipes, the evening will include single malt scotch and wine tasting, food stations, selected Scottish presentations and more.

Another feature we have added as a member benefit is the recently created the position of Lord Lyon for the Society. Donavin Baumgartner has been appointed to fulfill the responsibilities of organizing and maintaining the following Society issues:

  1. The History of the Society
  2. The By-Laws
  3. Proper Scottish etiquette and traditions

In closing, thank you Board members and members at large for your support and participation in this wonderful Society. What an honor it is to serve as your President, carrying forth the outstanding history of our culture and enjoying the camaraderie of being with those of the same ilk. We hope to see you all in January at the Robert Burns Supper on the 22nd and the Bonita Springs 1st Presbyterian Church Kirkin’ on the 30th.

As we reflect on how thankful we are for family and friends, let us remember how thankful we are to our Creator for the greatest gift we have, that of our Savior, Jesus Christ. During this holiday season, please look for ways that each of us can be thankful for this great blessing by showing “random acts of kindness” to those that God may bring across our path.

May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

God Bless,

David Wallace, President
