Spurtle Award

Pictured is Richard P. Melick, a former President of St. Andrews and Chair, Kirkin’ events for a large number of years.

Their direction, perfection and maintenance were of great importance to the Society over the years done single handedly by Dick. The St. Andrews Society recognized him with the FIRST WORLD WIDE SPURTLE AWARD and certificate on Sunday, February 28, 2010 just before the final 2010 Kirkin’ at the Moorings Presbyterian Church.

In presenting the award the Board of Directors expressed their appreciation and esteem in recognizing "where there is a need, there is a man: Richard "Dick" P. Melick.!" Note: Members of our St. Andrew's Society hand picked the spurtle from a Spurtle Forest while traveling in Scotland last summer.

In case you didn't know, here's the definition of spurtle:

Pronunciation: \sper-tel\
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1756

Scottish : a wooden stick for stirring porridge
