Clan MacKay In The Rain - Ft. Lauderdale Highland Games - 01/09/10

Four of our St. Andrews members and their spouses received recognition on Saturday, January 9 at the South Florida Scottish Association's HIGHLAND GAMES at Ft. Lauderdale!

With membership in their affiliate MACKAY Clan, St. Andrews Society members Ian and Loretta McKay (Ontario), Dick and Florine McKay (Illinois), James and Lynda Goldie (Florida)  and Don and Pat McGee (Ohio) were among those honored as the Clan of the Year because of their membership in the CLAN MACKAY Society. Don McGee is the SE Regional Vice President of Clan MacKay, USA.

Throughout its 37 year history, CLAN MACKAY Society, USA has had a clan tent for hospitality and visibility. MACKAY is the oldest and first formally constituted clan recognized in 1806 in Glasgow, Scotland by the Scottish clan authority preceding the Lord Lyon's office.

Rain and more rain, strong breezes on January 9th were certainly reminiscent of Scotland BUT UNWELCOME by all of our Southern Floridians. Temperatures hovered in the lower 40's F. One of the CLAN MACKAY members was heard saying," WE ARE THE FROZEN CHOSEN!!" Dick, Ian and Don responded with the Mackay motto: MANU FORTI!!

Unfortunately, the weather was so bad no photos were taken by our attending members. So we substituted the photo at right of Don and Pat McGee taken at the Stone Mountain, GA, games in 2009.

About Clan MacKay
"The name MacKay takes its origins from the Gaelic "Macaoidh" or "son of Hugh". The identity of this Hugh is uncertain but the name probably derives from a member of the ancient Celtic royal house, whose branches disputed the throne in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries."

"By the fourteenth century, the clan MacKay was well established in the most northerly and remote area of Scotland - their land extending from Cape Wrath along the north coast to Caithness."

"The warlike reputation of the clan is echoed in the family motto, "with a strong hand"."

Source for the above quotes is http://www.scotclans.com/scottish_clans/clan_mackay/history.html.

According to Wikipedia, the septs of Clan MacKay include, "Allan, Allanson, Bain, Bayne, Kay, Key, Keyes, MacAllan, MacBain, MacCaa, MacCaw, MacCay, MacGaa, MacGaw, MacGee, MacGhee, MacGhie, MacKay, MacKee, McKee, Mackie, MacPhail, MacQue, MacQuey, MacQuoid, MacVail, MacVain, MacVane, Morgan, Neilson, Nelson, Paul, Pole, Poleson, Pollard, Polson, Reay, Scobie, Williamson."
