UPDATE FROM KRISTINE IN SCOTLAND
October 2010

"As a chemist, I want to gain as much knowledge as possible, as a student, I want to push myself to study harder, as an athlete, I want to push myself to the next level, and as a friend, I want to use my experiences to help others succeed. The caliber of the chemistry program at St. Andrews is truly incredible.

There are opportunities to participate in corporate placements, perform individual research in state-of-the-art laboratories, and to continue through to a master’s degree. Over the summer I came to realize that the opportunities available would possibly never come up again. The difference between a Bachelor’s of Arts in Chemistry and Bachelor’s of Science or Master’s degree are worlds apart.

Over the summer I was offered a place as a full time undergraduate in the Univeristy of St. Andrews Master’s of Chemistry program. I have decided to return to St. Andrews to finish my degree. Everything happened very, very fast, but I am so excited every morning, to wake up, go to class and challenge myself. The classes here are incredibly difficult, but it’s a challenge that will hopefully pay off in the end.

I would truly like to continue to share my experiences with other college students and encourage them to challenge themselves as well, and I thank you for your continued support."

The St. Andrews Society of SW Florida Inc. 2010 Study in Scotland Scholarship recipient is Kristine Cosgrove of Buckingham in Lee County. A junior at FGCU, she will begin a FULL semester of Study in Scotland at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Scotland on February 3, 2010. Her chemistry major has her scheduled with four chemistry courses and labs with two electives during her Spring Semester at St. Andrews.

The 21 yr old student is one of two children of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Cosgrove, also of Lee County, Florida. Both her parents and Kristine were our Society's guests at the annual Rabbie Burns Supper, Sunday, January 24 where Kristine was introduced and presented with her ENLARGED $5,000 check for her semester of study at St. Andrews.

"By spending a semester in Scotland, living and studying, I will be able to take a different array of courses while simultaneously interacting with a new land, culture and lifestyle,” said Cosgrove, a junior majoring in chemistry. "Taking part in one of these programs will allow me not only to experience working with international students, but also the benefits of studying overseas.”
