The recent scholarship winner, Andrea McCrary, studied at the
University of Edinburgh in Scotland during the summer of 2009. Miss
McCrary majors in communication and English, and is the
Editor-in-Chief of Eagle News, the student media group at Florida
Gulf Coast University. She has also been the President of the Honors
Program, American Democracy Project, and the Creative Writing Club.
She will graduate from FGCU in May 2010. After graduation, she plans
on going to graduate school to further her studies in communication.
She wants to be a freelance journalist, novelist and a professor at
a university.
Upon her notification of winning the scholarship Miss McCrary said,
I am very thrilled and eager to encounter the amazing scenery,
intellectual stimulation, and enriching culture that await me there.
I hope to bring my experiences back with me to the United States and
share the Scottish culture with my peers, family and community.
Miss McCrary was able to spend a fulfilling month in Scotland where
she was able to tour the highlands and lowlands, as well as enjoy
the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Fringe Festival.
Her studies at the University of Edinburgh were of creative writing
and literature. She had a personal tutor to help her with her
writing and she feels as if she improved as a writer and as a
citizen of the world after her experience in Scotland. She said upon
her return, It was the best decision of my life to go to Scotland.
I really hope other students can have an experience like mine;
Scotland will change you, but in the best of ways.
