President's Newsletter - April 2010

To all Society Members,

Already our winter here in Florida is passing (with a sigh of relief) and Spring and Summer approaches.

To a lot of Scots folks our thoughts turn to Highland Games and the possibility of attending one of these games here in Florida.

In Scotland these Games take place from Cowal to Tomintoul and all points in between and they offer a unique mix of the cultural, sporting and social highlights of the traditional Scottish way of life.

They usually comprise a program of field and track events. Piping and Highland Dance and heavy event competitions such as tug-o war , hammer throwing and the tossing of the caber.

The competitive element is a major attraction, but when combined with the spectacle of Highland dancers and pipers, and the color and grandeur of the Scottish scenery which usually forms the background to such games they become a must on any visitors to Scotland’s visit itinerary.

Some of the most notable Games for the information of any members visit are,

Gourock Highland Games - May 9th
Scottish Pipe Band Championships - Dumbarton - May 22nd.
Blair Atholl Gathering and Highland Games - May 29th.

Our Society used to regularly visit such a Games here in South West Florida and if members were interested in resurrecting such a visit, please let your President know and we will investigate the possibility of arranging another such visit.

Our next event on our Social calendar is our Tartan Day Dinner at the English Pub in Naples – on April 6th- at the very attractive price of $40.00 per head and even at this last minute your presence would be very much welcomed.

Your President wishes you all a happy, healthy and enjoyable summer!

Lang may your lum reek
Wi ither folks coal”

Your President

David J Webster
